John R. Martin

It is with sadness and regret that Grosman, Grosman and Gale LLP announce the passing of our esteemed partner and friend John Richard Martin.

John was a partner of Grosman, Grosman & Gale LLP where he practiced law for 27 years. John litigated employment law cases before the courts of Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada.

He was co-author of Employment Law in Ontario and Discrimination Employment in Ontario as well as a regular contributor to The Employment Bulletin newsletter. John was a highly respected lawyer who loved the law and practiced law in the finest tradition of the Bar.

John was an integral part of the team at Grosman, Grosman & Gale LLP. John was passionate about the law – at our firm, he was the “go to guy” if anyone needed a case, no matter how obscure, in order to advance or develop a legal argument. He was a creative and critical thinker, not afraid to advance new legal arguments, refining them through dialogue and often lively debate with colleagues.

Sports was another one of John’s great loves. A die-hard Chicago Bears fan, he would stand up to the ridicule and jokes which followed regularly on Mondays during football season with good nature and a trademark smile. John had a sharp wit and the ability to laugh, even at himself.  He was a good friend.

John had a remarkable gift for organizing complex legal issues into an orderly written argument, which would flow logically and smoothly. He also had the patience and tenacity to tackle major cases, with thousands of documents, transcripts and issues.  He was an extremely hard working and dedicated advocate.

Clients and colleagues alike will miss the benefit of his sharp mind and warm humanity. His advice was regularly sought by lawyers both inside and outside the law firm.  He was respected by all who knew him and will be missed by his many clients and friends.
